Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA)
History
Alpha Hydroxy Acids derive from various fruits and milk. The earliest known lactic acid was from milk, malic acid from apples, and citric acid from topical fruits, lemons and limes, tartaric acid from wine grapes, and finally glycolic acid from sugar cane. Of all the alpha hydroxy acids, the later has the smallest molecular size and thus better penetration capabilities along with the most effective skin conditioning.
Indications
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA''s) are now being used for acne, sun damaged skin, surface wrinkles, blotchy skin, and ichythyosis (extremely dry and scaly skin).
Mechanism
Skin is a growing organ and as it grows the outer dead layers slough off. Sometimes, due to medical conditions such as acne or simply aging, these cells don''t continue to slough off as they should. They build up and accumulate on the skin''s surface. The result of the build up can be a courser looking skin, raised brown blotchy spots, scaly areas as well as unwelcome wrinkles. This excessive buildup of dead cells thickens the top surface of the skin thus distorting the living tissue underneath. Hair follicles and pores blocked by dead skin cells and topical pollutants, retard the natural flow of oils to the surface. AHA''s break the excessive cross linking of the outer layer (stratum cornum). Once the thickened stratum cornum sheds, smoother, softer looking skin will appear. There is a gradual clearing and cleaning of pores, another helpful step for acne prone skin. If used regularly there is a higher turnover of collagen and elastin which aids in the slowing of unwanted wrinkles. The deeper layers of the skin appear firmer and more retentive of moisture once the outer layer is loosened. Over time there is an improvement to the overall strength and integrity of the tissue below resulting in smaller pores and skin that looks and feels soft and silky.
